Ann- Marie Archer Interview
I love what I do.  I am inspired by how recruiting can have a dramatic influence on someone’s life.  It helps them to start a journey that will put their kids through college and put shoes on their feet.  More importantly, we combine coaching and intentions in recruiting because it also helps individuals to fulfill purpose in their life.

When you look at what career you’ve chosen, business person, professional services, banker, etc, often people believe there is only ONE way to have a “dream job” and they can’t see what’s beyond this view.  Other times, people are not even sure how to identify what the purpose of their life is.  They want to contribute, but are stuck and don’t know how to move forward.
How do we get around that?  Let’s think about other ways to fulfill what you are looking for.  Often, people try to make it ‘overcomplicated’ by thinking “I’m not good enough” or “I don’t have the skills.”  When we are coaching someone, we believe they are perfect the way they are and our goal is to unearth their complete possibility and potential in the world.

We start the journey by taking a look to see where you are already making a difference. We look at your life and find the areas of contribution. Then we look to see where you can increase contribution.  This could be as simple as putting the paper on a neighbor’s doorstep or doing extra legwork for a coworker.

Next, begin to identify what it is you love to do.  Everyone has a special (interesting) thing that they are intrigued by, but most people don’t know what that is.  Why bother focusing on *why* you like something…why not simply accept that you are intrigued by a certain thing like collecting stamps, creating bonsai plants or identifying bird species. Some things just are the way they are because they are the way they are. Sounds strange to some…but honestly isn’t it easier to accept that you love everything to do with trains than it is to wonder *why* you love everything about trains? Sometimes people think it’s odd, but really everyone has that one thing that just fascinates them.  We just have to find out what it is.
Struggling to identify yourself with your current status is absolutely normal so start to ask yourself questions about what you want to do like, “If you could do absolutely anything in the world, what would you do?”, “What do you do in your spare time?”, “If I gave you a choice of 16 books (i.e., historical fiction, comic, drama,) which books would you read?”.   Once the answers start coming, we always want to ask, “What is it about this that intrigues me? “ By answering these questions and delving into your “obsessions” and finding the commonality that links them, you begin the journey of stating your intentions and being clear about what it is you want.

For example, an older gentleman who worked for a multinational corporation in technology chose to make a change and move into investing in technology.  At a certain point in his life, it became unclear which direction he wanted to go.  He answered clarifying questions  and he realized the commonality in all the jobs he had held.  He found his greatest joy was to be in the role of player/coach. The process of finding commonality in “what you love”, regardless of the job type helps you gain clarity on what you want to do.

Why is it so important to be clear?  There is always a way to get where you going, but you have to know where you are going.   Even in an informational interview it is helpful to be able to communicate

·        where I am
·        what I would like
·        where I want to go
Once you have a clear statement of what you want, then you will need to create a plan to get you where you want to go.  This is essentially a Gap Analysis of what you are doing now and where you want to go.  Start by making a list and review what you've already done.  If you are a nurse and want to transition into teaching, you might begin teaching what you know which is nursing. Try the community colleges or teaching in a hospital. The transition is much easier to start by working with what you know.
The journey to find your dream job takes discipline.  How you structure your day is important.  Do things that keep you top of mind with your colleagues like having coffee with people who could help influence a referral or who believe in you and who would refer you to others;  mentoring with someone you admire; taking a class and/or volunteering with a group of like-minded people.

Still scared?  Failure isn’t a word in my vocabulary.  It is only opportunity, not a closure but a learning opportunity and the greatest teacher in the world.  It’s painful.  The key is to adjust what you are doing and look at what is working and what isn’t working.  For example, getting fired is a painful situation or as a leader when you have hired the wrong person and you have to fire someone.  One of the biggest reasons that a business fails is because they carry the wrong people too long at a high cost.  Getting fired or being let go is often a painful thing to experience, but necessary for both the individual and the business.  However hard, the experience will allow you to move on.  Take the opportunity to learn something and apply it as you begin the next journey of your life.   What people miss is that you are not your failure, in other words, it’s not a character defect, but rather a function of actions and situations.

Every day, you choose to function out of a state of mind which has natural actions that go with that state of being.  For example, being organized & clear, there are certain actions that arise from that state of being.  There are days when I don’t want to be organized or clear, but I choose to act that way.  Every day, you get to create who you are.  The thing is, you tell people who you are and they believe it.  Surprisingly, not everyone chooses to be empowered.  Right now, it’s your choice.
